Abstract


This study was designed to clarify the significant stress-events of marital life which had precipitated neurotic decompensation among neurotic housewives.
Four hundred and fifty five neurotics investigated in this study were obtained from out-patient department of neuropsychiatry of KrungPook University Hospital and Taegu Presblrterian Hospital, from Jan. 1976 to Jun. 1977. A comparative study of stress-events of marital life in neurotic housewives with normal control group obtained from the mothers of primary school children by questionaire.
The results were summarized as follows :
The neurotic housewives showed a higher incidence of abnormal marital status such as remarriage, divorce, separation, and widowhood than the normal control group.
The incidence of childlessness and only child in neurotic group was higher than that in control group, but the incidence of having many children(over 5 children) was higher in control group.
Prior to the onset of neurotic breakdown, 52.3% of total patients had been under the serious stresses caused by husbands, 16% from the members of patient´s family-in-law, 12.1% from their offsprings and daughter-in-law, and 2.9% from the other sources in marital life.
Twenty three percents of the total neurotics complained of the concubinage and indulgence in extramarital affair on the part of husband, 9.7% struggling with mistreatment by mother-ln-law, and 9.7% distressed by their offspring met with misfortune.
According to diagnosis of the patients, the depressive neurosis had most strees-events in their marital life, especially in the case their husband´s indulgence in extramarital affair.
In 83% of total patients, the symptomatic onset of .neurosis was precipitated by the serious stress-events of marital and family-life.
All of the above results were statistically significant as compared with the normal control group.
