Abstract
A clinical observation was made on 72 patients with histologically documented hepatocellular carcinoma.
The age peak was 5th decade and the male to female ratio was 3 : 1.
On admission 85% of the patients presented with RUQ or epigastric pain with mass and weight loss.
The remaining patients presented symptoms suggestive of liver abscess, acute cholecystitis, pleural effusion or hepatitis.
Fever was an important physical sign.
Anemia and leukocytosis were found in 54% and 23% of patients, respectively.
Elevated alkaline phosphatase and LDH elevation were most frequent abnormalities of liver funtion test.
HBsAg and AFP were positive in 15% and 41% of patients, respectively.
On chest X-ray elevation of right diaphragm was found in 26% of patients. Coexisting Coexisting clonorchiasis was seen in 14% of patients.
On liver scanning all cases revealed cold areas and 80% of them were localized in right lobe.
Metastatic lesions were found in lung (12.5%), pleura(4.2%) and cervical lymph nodes(4.2%).
Observed systemic manifestations include hypoglycemia (1 case), erythrocytosis (3 cases) and hypercalcemia (2 cases).
