Abstract

Clinical study has been conducted on 44 children with leukemia, seen at Kyungpook University Hospital from July, 1974 to June, 1978. Following results were obtained.
Male to female ratio was 1.2:1.
Highest rate was seen in 13-15 years of age group and all the patients were found to be acute type.
Lymphoblastic type was the most common type, comprising 72.7% (32cases), followed by myeloblastic 18.3% (8 cases), monocytic 4.5% (2 cases), progranulocytic 4.5% (2 cases).
Chief complaints in order of the frequency were pallor (62%), fever (62%), homorrhage or purpura (55%) and weakness (43%). Acute myeloblastic leukemia showed more tendency to bleed than acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Hepatomegaly was observed in 78% of patients, splenomegaly, hepatosplenomegaly and lympadenopathy 45% 41% and 59% respectively. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia involved liver and spleen more frequently than the other types.
In 100% of patients homoglobin values were below 10.0gm%.
Leukopenia was seen in 42% and leukocytosis (over 10,000/§§) in 53%.
Most of patients(96%) manifested thrombocytopenia and platelet counts were correlated fairely well with bleeding tendency.
