Abstract


An attempt has been made to evaluate pertussis agglutinin response in two groups to pertussis antigen as presently marketed in Korea.
One group of 30 infants received 1, 2 or 3 doses of DPT vaccine (0.3m1. each) at approximately monthly interval, the other group of 29 infants received 1, 2 or 3 doses of DPT vaccine (0.5m1. each) at approximately monthly interval.
A total of 77 infants were studied.
1) Control group of 18 infants not immunized failed to elicit an agglutinin response. 2) The initial dose of vaccine failed to elicit an agglutinin response in both group. 3) Number of antigen doses given correlates with agglutinin titer.
4) 50% of infants received 3 doses of 0.3m1. DPT had high agglutin titers in the >1 : 80 range, while 36.4% of infants received 3 doses of 0.5 ml. DPT achieved these agglutinin titers. The evidence is clear that dosage of pertussis antigen does not influence the levels of agglutinin achieved.
Therefore, schedules of immunization with more than 3 reduced doses may be recommended in neurologically high risk infants.
