Abstract


Distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) neurons were studied in rat cerebral cortex by means of double immunohistochemistry (free floating ABC method).
1. Generally most NPY-immunoreactive (IR) neurons were distributed in II/III and V/VI layers with slight increases in concentration in the deeper layers.
2. VIP-IR neurons were found in layers II through VI with the highest number in layers II and III.
3. NPY-IR neurons exhibited morphologic characteristic of multipolar, bitufted and bipolar varieties. VIP-IR neurons were chiefly bipolar morphologically.
4. The size of nerve cell bodies, measured by image analyser, were different in NPY and VIP-IR neurons. The size of NPY-IR cell bodies (Maximal length : 9-19μm, Area : 50-140μm2) were larger than VIP-IR neurons (10-13μm, 50-60μm2).
5. VIP-IR neurons were denser than NPY-IR neurons. Some of NPY and VIP neurons were distributed near blood vessels in cerebral cortex.
Based on above findings, it can be morphologically concluded that NPY and VIP play a regulatory role in blood circulation of the brain.
