Abstract


In order to study body composition by Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, the author selected randomly 30 adult men as subjects, who were form 21 to 25 years old and had complete growth and development, and measured their physiques (body height,
body
weight, chest girth and sitting height) and skinfold thickness from September 1, 1991 to August 31, 1992. On the basis of these measurements, the authors calculated physical indices and total fat percent. On the basis of the results of bone
densitometry, the authors analyzed body fat weight, body composition between left and right sides, body composition according to body position, bone mineral content, bone mineral density and total bone calcium, and compared the difference between
the
fatness which was calculated indirectly and that gained from the bone densitometry. After that, the authors analyzed correlation of results from two methods.
@ES The results were as follows.
@EN 1. General characteristics
The mean age of the subjects was 23.40±1.33 (21-25) years.
2. Physical measurement
1) Physique
The mean body height was 170.92±4.25cm,
the meaan body weight was 65.97±6.84kg,
the mean chest girth was 91.36±5.14cm,
the mean sitting height was 90.28±2.79cm and the results corresponded to that of Korean standards.
2) Physical and nutritional index
The mean relative body weight was 38.56±3.41,
the mean relative chest girth was 53.45±2.65,
the mean relative sitting height was 52.82±1.03,
Rohrer index was 1.31±0.11,
Kaup index was 2.26±0.18,
Vervaeck index was 92.01±5.21,
Pelidisi index was 96.36±3.35 and the results were relatively good.
3. Body fat by physical measurement
Body surface 1.770±0.1028m2, body volume was 61.76±6.711, body density was 1.0686±0.00571/kg, body fat was 9.02±2.45kg and body fat percent was 13.47±2.29%.
4. Body fat by skinfold thickness
The mean skinfold thickness was 21.03±4.38mm, the mean subscapular skinfold thickness was 19.57±4.43mm, the mean abdominal skinfold thickness was 19.38±5.39mm, the mean lumbar skinfold thickness was 24.65±5.96mm and the mean triceps skinfold
thickness was 20.47±6.57mm. Body fat was 17.64±2.86kg and body fat percent was 26.83±4.02%.
5. Body fat bone densitomertry
Total body fat percent was 19.73±5.23% and according to body position, that of upper limb was 18.41±5.21%, that of lower limb was 20.41±5.03% and that of trunk was 19.33±5.63%. In the comparison of above results, body fat by bone densitometry
was
similar to that by skinfold thickness, but there were some differences between body fat by physical measurement and body fat by other methods.
6. Body composition according to body position
Trunk was highest as 46.41±1.59%, lower limb was 35.82±1.41%, upper limb was 9.90±0.55%, head was 7.87±0.75% in order. In comparison of body composition between left and right sides, right side was superior to left side.
7. Bone mineral content, total bone calcium (%) and bone density
In bone mineral amount and percent by body position, that of upper limb was 345.27±45.06g (5.33±0.56%), that of lower limb was 1026.30±134.58g (4.37±0.40%), that of trunk was 950.77±145.79g (3.12±0.40%) and total bone mineral content was
2855.00±351.25g (4.35±0.41%). Total bone calcium was 1084.93±133.40g (1.65±0.15%), Bone density was 1.155±0.078g/cm3
8. Ideal body weight
Correlation coefficiency between body height and body weight, r=+0.637 (p<0.001) and regression equation was Y (body weight, kg) =0.963 X (body height, cm)-98.57. Ideal body weight by body height was listed in table 12.
9. There were high correlations among body fat by bone densitometry and that by skinfold thickness and body fat by physical measurements.
10. Correlation coefficciency and regression equation between body fat weight and relative body weight were listed in Table 11.
