Study of the Antiphlogistic, Analgesic and Antifebrile Functions of Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum as used "Ong-Jeaw" Disease

Abstract


Under recognition of the similarity between "Ong-Jeaw" disease in Oriental medicine and inflammatory disease, Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum has been used as an antiphlogistic, analgesic and antifebrile.
The present report shows the antiphlogistic, analgesic and antifebrile effects of Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum (A), Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum extracted powder (AP), Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum with compound of each extracted powder (CP), Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum With ethanol (A + ethanol) and Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum without Rhei Rhizoma (B). Aspirine was used an antiphlogistic and analgesic; and aminopyrine as an antifebrile in comparison with Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. Sunbangwhahnyung-Eum liquid (A) reduced the rat edema induced by acetic acid significantly in accordance with the increase of dosage.
2. The effects of dried extracted powder of Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum (AP), Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum liquid (A) and each dried extracted powder compound (CP) in this order were recognized against the rat edema induced by acetic acid.
3. Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum added ethanol (A + ethanol) was most effective against the rat edema induced by acetic acid, Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum added Rhei Rhizoma (A) and Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum removed Rhei Rhizoma (B) in this order.
4. The effects of Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum liquid (A) against the rat pain induced by acetic acid have been strengthened by increase of dosage; and the excellent analgesic effect was recognized in the test of tripling the dosage.
5. The Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum liquid (A), extracted powder (AP) and the compound of each extracted powder (AP) were tested for analgesic effects; the liquid (A) has the most effective analgesic function, then the extracted powder (AP), then the compound of each extracted powders (CP).
6. Dosages reduced by a half and a quarter also had analgesic effects.
7. Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum (A), and removed Rhei Rhizoma (B) were compared; the former had a more effective analgesic function.
8. The ethanol solutions of 50%, 32% and 16% were added to the liquid of Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum (A); the increases of ethanol had more powerful analgesic effects.
9. The rat serum was analyzed and tested for the rate of degeneration by heat; the liquid removed Rhei Rhizoma (B) has an antidegenerative function, but the liquid (A) and added ethanol (A + ethanol) appeared to have no effectiveness against the rate of degeneration.
10. The extracted powder (AP), the liquid (A) and compound of each extracted powder (CP), in this order, have effectiveness for lowering the normal body temperature of mice, Hitherto, the excellent antifebrile effect of the extracted powder was determined.
11. According to the above experiments, the Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum (A) and its extracted powder (AP, CP) were found to be effective against rat pain, fever and edema induced by acetic acid.
So Sunbangwhalmyung-Eum which is used for the inflammatory ("Ohng-Jeaw") diseases in Oriental Medical clinics is assumed to have a curative effect against those diseases; and its extracted powder is considered to be helpful for modernization of Oriental Medicine.
