Abstract


This investigation was attempted to find out the amount of CO in smoking and carbon-monoxide concentration in alveolar air of the lung by CO-detector method and breath CO analysis method.
The following conclusions were obtained:
1) The average amounts ofcarbon monoxide produced per each cigarette piece were 49.58cc in Korean cigarette and 29.5cc in American cigarette.
2) The amount of CO production by cigarettes were decreased 19.7% in Korean cigarette & 42.3% in American cigarette, when 11-12% of water contents in cigarettes was desiccate.
3) The "Paxton" (American cigarette) which contains hopcalit as a filter produced only 17cc CO per gram of cigarettes & this amount of CO is about a third of average Korean cigarettes & a half of average American cigarettes. The use of special filter as well as hopcalite is recommandable to diminish the production of carbon monpxide in smoking.
4) The alveolor CO concentration is directly proportional to the degree of smoking.
5) The maximum permissible concentration(100 ppm) of carbon monxide can be reached, theoretically, by smoking 16 Korean cigarettes & smoking 27 American cigarettes in a room of 8.05m³ without ventilation.
