Abstract


A study was carried out on the distribution of mushrooms in Kwang Nung, Korea, from March 1964 to October 1969, on mushroom poisonings compiled from records of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, Seoul City Sanitary Laboratory, and Newspapers from 1963 to 1968, on the knowledge of high school male students in Seoul and Kwang Nung in 1969, and the disribution of mushrooms at markets in 1969.
Main findings were summarized as follows:
1. Out of 214 species of wild mushrooms at Kwang Nung, Korea, 160(74.8%) were edible, while 14(6.5%) poisonous.
2. Most of the mushrooms were growing during the period of July to September, mainly August.
3. Out of 159 mushroom poisonings, 48(30.2% of fatality rate) were dead.
4. The ratio of mushroom (145) to food poisonings (3,185) was 4.6% from 1663 to 1968 while that of death by mushroom (42) to food (265) was 15.9%.
5. Among 3,185 food poisonings, 970 were poisoned by meat and its products, 742 by fish and its products, 422 by milk and products and 145 by mushroom.
6. Out of 265 high school male in students Seoul and Kwang Nung, 254(95.8%) have eaten mushrooms, mainly in soup, and only 26(9.8%) were able to identify poisonous mushrooms.
7. At markets in Seoul, most of mushrooms were sold from July to September, and one poisonous species, Naematolma fasciculare (Fr) Karst., was found at the Kuoung Dong market in August.
