Abstract

With the criteria of classification on grading physical disability due to leprosy set by W.H.O. Expert Committee (1966), an epidemiological study was conducted on 300 lepers who settled down in Ham An Gun, Kyung Nam Province during the period of May through July, 1970.
Main Findings are summarized as follows;
1. Distribution of the disability grades as a whole (the highest grade regardless of affected site) showed that GradeⅠ(34.4%) had the highest freruency followed by Grade Ⅲ(27.0%), Grade Ⅳ(23.0%), GradeⅡ(9.7%), and Grade Ⅴ(6.0%) except the GradeⅡ, the frequency decreased in higher grades.
2. More males had higher grades of physical disability than females, especially for hands and feet probably due to more chances of exposure to injury for males.
3. 164 cases of 300 were lepromatous type when classified by type of disease. The majority of the cases belonging to GradeⅡandⅤwere lepromatous type, but other grades had more cases of tuberculoid type.
4. Age distribution of the patients surveyed showed that more than 60% belonged to the age group of 30-49 bears. The physical disability tended to be getting severer as age increased.
5. The age of onset was around 20 years of age; 33.3% in 15-19 years, 25.3% in 20-24 years.
6. The duration between the onset and the present was from 10 to 29 years in about 70% of the cases; 35.3% for 10-19 years of duration, 33.0% for 20-29 years. The relationship between the duration and the severity of disability showed that longer the duration, severer the physical disability.
7. Most of the cases started treatment within 2 years (47.0%) after the onset; 27.0% in 3-4 years, 12.0% over 7 years. It was found that when the patients started treatment sooner after the onset, lighter physical disability was resulted.
