Abstract


Environmental pollution has been one of the great social problems throughout the world as the result of industrial developments.
Especially, the pollution of water and air are very serious problems in urban and industrial area. Water pollution due to industrial wastes has caused the lack of drinking water, brought out water-borne diseases, spoiled the crops and fishes, and damaged to the scenery of environment, etc.
Special efforts have been made to prevent and control pollution and studies on the treatment of industrial waste were carried out by many researchers.
A study was carried out on the decoloration of waste water with using the discharges which were anthracite briquette ash, activated carbon, sand and diatomaceous earth; and main findings were as follow;
1. The results of the water quality analysis; PH was about 7.0 and external appearance was from reddish purple to dark blue, C.O.D was high and variable, but it is considered that according to the dyeing process, waste water from textile factory contains many kinds on chemical substances in the view of C.O.D changes.
It is necessary that well planned examination and treatment on waste water should be developed.
2. Decoloration efficiency of the discharges showed that activated carbon was excellent as expected, however, because of having slow flow rate and high cost, it is practically infeasible. (following to Table 3. and 4.)
3. It was proved that 5-20 mesh anthracite briquette ash combined with 20 mesh sand had good decloring ability and moderate flow rate. (following to Table 5.)
4. The practical using of anthracite briquette ash and sand which are abundance in resources and low at cost is recommendable for the treatment of the dye stuffs in waste water and furthermore, expected to reduce B.O.D., C.O.D. and suspended solids.
