Abstract

Typhoid fever has been one of the epidemic in Korea for many years. The wide use of antibiotics and the changes of host and environmental conditions might have offered some influences on the changes of bacteriological properties of Salmonella typhi prevailed in Korea.
In order to examine any bacteriological changes that might have occurred in Salminella typhi isolated in Korea, the author carried out the tests for antigenic structure, biochemical reactions and sensitivity reactions to antibiotics on 105 strains isolated from several epidemic areas and collected from several laboratories. The main findings were as follows:
1. All strains contained 0 antigens 9 and 12, Viantigen, and phase 1H antigend.
2. All strains tested reveled typical biochemical characteristics, although they were isolated from different areas and at different time. The positive rotes of Arabinose fermentation. Dulcitol fermentation and Xylose fermentation were 11.4%, 0.95%, and 52.4% respectively.
3. Most strains were very sensitive to Chloramphenicol and there were 2 strains which were highly resistant to Chloramphenicol. Many strains were somewhat sensitive to Tetracycline and Neomycin.
4. Many strains revealed V-W or W variations during the procedures of isolation and identification.
5. There were no differences between V-form strains and V-W or W-form strains in biochemical and serological properties and in sensitivity patterns to antibiotics.
