Abstract

A survey on Neotrombicula species was carried out in South Korea for 5 months from September 1967 through january 1968 to determine its geographical distribution. The following information was obtained from this survey:
1) Of the small mammals collected for the survey, the majority (75%) were Apodemus agrarius.
2) Host preference of Neotrombicula mites for several species of small animals was determined. It was found that of the 587 Apodemus agrarius studied, 144 (19.4%) were infested with Neotrombicula mites. Of 34 Clethryonomys rufocanus studied, 12 (35%) were found to be infested with Neotrombicula mites. Lepus coreanus and Sciurius vulgaris species were found to be free from the Neotrombicula mites.
3) It was found that 91 of 243 small mammals from areas near the Demilitarized Zone were infested with Neotrombicula mites. Small mammals from southern coastal areas and Cheju island were Neotrombicula mites free.
4) Geographical distribution of Neotrombicula mites in South Korea was found to be extensive. Neotrombicula tamyai and Neotrombicula japonica were collected from 10 locations in South Korea. However, Neotrombicula pomeranzevi and Neotrombicula talmiensis were collected from only one location.
5) of the 3153 Neotrombicula mites, 75 percent were Neotrombicula tamyai, 12 percent were Neotrombicula japonica, 8 percent were Neotrombicula southardi, 3.5 percent were Neotrombicula icikawai and 1.5 percent were Neotrombicula talmiensis and Neotrombicula pomeranzevi.
6) Neotrombicula mites were found in extensive elevations(i.e. 10m through 1100m above sea level). Neotrombicula talmiensis species were collected from only high elevation(i.e. 1010m above sea level).
