Abstract


Treatment of large quantity of drinking water requires large amount of alum coagulant and the deposited sludge is discharged to pollute the river water.
A study was carried out to recover the alum from sludge by sulfuric acid treatment, and the results could summerized as follows:
1. The water content of the sludge is 90% and the dry sludge contains 12% alumina.
2. About 67% of the alum is recovered from the sludge and the free acid is less than 0.2%, although the sulfuric acid was overtreated for 50% against reasonable dosage. The alumnia content was 3% of the solution.
3. The turbidity is less than 3 degrees when the raw water of 20 to 500 degrees is treated with the 3% liquid alum.
4. The volume of liquid alum is easily halved by increasing 3% alum concentration to 6%.
