-A Survey on Sickness and Medical Cost in Korean Coastal Area-

Abstract


In order to survey the kinds and volume of sicknesses and medical expenses of coastal residents this country, surveys were conducted on 410 households comprising 2,248 persons in coastal areas(Yangang-gun and Yongil-gun) during a one-mon period from January 1 to 31, 1971. As a result. the following conclusion has been reached:
1) During the survey period, a total of 427 sick cases were reported, thereby showing prevalence rate of 189.9 per population of 1,000, broken down into 191 cases or prevalence rate of 171.2 per population of 1,000 for male, and 236 cases for or prevalence rate of 208.3 per population of 1,000 for female.
2) prevalence for male was highest at 298.2 per population of 1,000 for the age group of 50 to 59 years, second highest at 262.6 for the age group of 40 to 49 years, and lowest at 90.4 for the age group of 5 to 9 years. As for female, it was highest at 374.1 for the age group of 40 to 49 years, second highest at 324.7 for the age group of 50 to 59 yeats, and lowest at 84.4 for the age group of 5 to 9 years.
3) In case of male, prevalence rate by educational stan dard was highest or 500.0 per population of 1,000 for high school graduates, second highest at 313.6 for those enrolled in moddle schools, and lowest at 100.0 for cillege graduates. As for female, it was highest at 333.3 per population of 1,000 for those enrolled in middle schools, second highest at 305.9 for those who were barely able to read Korean alphabet, and lowest at 108.2 for those yet to attend school.
4) By occupation, the male sick rate of farmers was highest at 272.7 per population of 1,000 for farmer, that of fishermen second was highest at 226.3, that of the group classified as not applicable was lowest at 117.3. As for female, sick rate was highest at 341.4 per population of 1,000 for those engaged in commerce, second highest at 333.3 for those engaged in miscellaneous occupation, and lowest at 148.4 for the group classified as not applicable.
5) As for male prevalence rate by kind of sickness. respiratory organ diseases reached the highest rate of 73.5per population of 1,000 and digestive organ diseases showed the second highest rate of 53.8, while the lowest rate of 0.9 was indicated respectively by allergy diseases, hormonal organ diseases, disorder of metabolism and malnutrition, sexual and urinary organ diseases, and skin and connective tissue diseases. As for female, digestive organ diseases marked the highest rate or 79.4 per population of 1,000 and respiratory organ diseases showed the second highest rate 75.9 while the lowest rate of 0.9 was shown respectively by allergy diseases, hormonal system diseases, disorder of matabolism and malnutrition, mental disorders, mental and nervous disorders, and abnormal personality.
6) The average amount of medical expenses per case was ₩570.4 for male paient and ₩ 360.7 for female patient. In case of male, the greatest average amount of medical expenses or ₩ 1,210.9 was paid by the age group of 50 to 59 while in case of female, the greatest amount or ₩ 783.3 was paid by the age group of 70 or more years.
7) By educational standard of male patients, the greatest average amount of expenses or 2,280.0 per case was paid by middle school graduates, the second greatest amount or ₩ 761.5 by primary school graduates, and the smallest amount or ₩ 150 respectively paid by those enrolled in primary schools and those enrolled in middle schools. As for female patients, the greatest average amount or ₩ 1,250.0 per case was apid by high school graduates, the second greatest amount or ₩ 489.5 by illiterates, and the smallest amount or ₩ 100 by those enrolled in middle schools.
8) By occupation of male patients, those engaged in commerce paid the greatest average amount of medical expenses or ₩2,072.7 per case of therapy, those engaged in agriculture paid the second greatest average amount or ₩1,794.1, and those engaged in miscel laneous occupations paid the smallest average amount or ₩1,000. As for femae patients, unemployed persons paid the greatest average amount or ₩ 573.9, those attending to household duties the second greatest amount or ₩503.8, those engaged in miscellaneous occupations the smallest amount or ₩ 100.0.
9) As for the amount of medical expenses by kind of sickness, male patients paid an average of ₩ 20,000 or the greatest amount per case of therapy for sexual and urinary organ diseases, ₩10,50.0 or the second greatest amount for circulation system diseases, and the smallest amount or ₩ 162.2 for symtomic senility and cases unfit for diagnosis. Female patients paid an average of ₩ 2,500.0 or the greatest amount respectively per case of therapy for allergy diseases, hormonal organ diseases, disorders of metabolism and malnutrition; ₩1,250.0 or the second greatest amount respectively for nervous system, and sense organ disorders, and circulating system disorders; and ₩ 143.9 or the smollest amount for respiratory system diseases.
