Abstract

A study on the knowledge and attitude of nursing students toward community health and child health was conducted at 9 schools of nursing. namely, 3 collegiate and 6 diploma schools in Korea, during the period from June 1 to July 10, 1972. For the study, questionnaire forms were sent to 445 senior students and the replies were obtained through mail.
An analysis of data collected showed the following findings.
1) Seventy six per cent of nursing students surveyed has shown that they were
satisfied with nursing profession for their future.
2) Regarding their interests in community health. 71.9 per cent of students had
moderate, and 14.9 per cent had much interest. As many as 98.7 per cent of them
approved about nurse´s participation in the community activities.
Health education on child health for children as well as their parents was felt very necessary, but it was turned out to be not well practiced by graduate nurses by some reasons.
It was believed that two of the great problems in community health teaching seemed to be insufficient curriculum for community health and the lack of financial support.
3) Teaching philosophy or educational objectives in nursing education must shift their emphasis from hospital centered nursing education to a community centered education. stressing comprehensive health care for the community, and the basic nursing education must ve strengthend with public health nursing for the community in Korea.
4) Regarding their knowledge and interests in vital statistics(1970), those who gave correct answer were:
Crude birth rate : 4.9 per cent
Crude death rate : 13.0 per cent
Population increase rate : 20.9 per cent
Infant mortality rate in urban : 9.9 per cent
Infant mortality rate in rural : 10.3 per cent
Maternal mortality rate : 4.5 per cent
Morbidity rate of tuberculosis : 25.4 per cent
In general, knowledge and interests of nursing students in various vital statistics were very poor, and one of the reasons might be insufficient teaching due to lack of accurate national data.
5) Regarding their knowledge about tetanus neonatorum, most of nursing students
answered that they learned it in lecture, and knew it´s symptoms, causes and
prevention. 60.2 per cent of them have seen the tetanus neonatorum case in clinic or out patient department. As there are many home delveries by non-medical attendants in Korea. Special emphasis seems to be necessary to put on child health program in the community, and nurses also must program in the community, and nurses also must devote a great deal of their attention to child health.
6) Regarding their most effective health education methods about tetanus neonatorum to the general public, home visiting for health education appeared to be more important than mass media.
In view of the above results, with the growing demands for changes in the methods of delivery of health today in Korea, it was strongly felt that the professional nurses must be able to fit into the ever changing patten of society, and school curriculum must be able to meet such needs of the society.
It was believed therefore that the inclusion of child health care and community health into nursing education would be most desirable to improve not only nursing education but also overall pudlic health program in Korea.
