A Survey on the Patient Life in a General Hospital in Korea

Abstract


The following results are abtained from a survey on hospital life of patient in Seoul National University hospital who have stayed more than 5 days(in case of patients who have undergone operation, 5 days after the completion fo operation) during the period fo 45 days, between July 25 and September 10, 1972.
The sample consists of 107 man-patients and 74 woman-patients under the age bracket of 15 through 64 years old.
1. Only 58.6% of the patients who have been interviewed has show complete satisfaction about the attitudes of nurses who have taken care of them, and rest of the patients has viewed the care as mechanical, indifferent, unfriendly and commanding in the order of a sample size revealed.
Only 66.2% of woman-patients have been satisfied with the attitude of nurses while 53.3% of manpatients have shown their satisfaction. However, the degree of satisfaction were not dependent upon the duration of patients in the hospital.
2. Occasional check by nurses were considered as necessary by 77.4% of the patients interviewed, while the rest of the sample regarded the checks as unnecessary for the reason such as that it is merely a procedure, it gives bad impression and tension.
Patients who have undergone operation, and have stayed longer day in the hospital have viewed it as necessary.
3. About the medication results, 60.6% of the patients has hoped to be informed, and man-patients were more anxious to Know about it than womanpatients.
However, it was not dependent on the kinds of religion which various patients had.
Also above the half of the patients interviewed has said that doctors did explaian about the medication results.
4. About 58.2% of the patients has revealed their preference that some visitors or carers be with them, and the degree of its preference was higher in the care of woman-patients.
Howerver, it was not dependent upon the lengthness of stay in the hospital.
5. About the regulation that hospital permits 4 hours of meeting per day, only 48.4% of the patints were satientisfied with it while 40.3% of them thought it too short.
Also woman-patients hoped more lenghty meeting hours compared to man patients.
6. About hospital meal, only 46.4% of the patients were satisfied with it, while 76.8% of them hoped to be assisted by relative during the meal time.
