Abstract

In order to study the degree of concern of Korean newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and pertinent circles about pollution, studies were made on three daily newspapers (The Dong-A Ilbo, The Kukje Shinbo, and The Daegu Maeil Shinmun) published during the six-year period from January 1, 1967 to December 1972 and on weekly and monthly magazines listed in the "Index to News reports of Korean Publications, National Assembly Library," and enquetes were given to pertinent personages.
Through the analysis of the resultant data, the following conclusion has been reached:
1. During the period covered by the study. a total of 581 news articles were carried by newspapers concerning pollution, and 344 articles were by magazines. The number of news reports concerning pollution increased yearly in both cases. A sharp increase was noted particularly from 1969 to 1970.
2. By the kinds of article, features, editorials, and statistcal reports of survey results without citing or carrying any specific damages, petition, or foreign instance constituted 59.7 per cent in case of newspapers and 65.2 per cent in case of magazines, both greatest proportions.
3. By kind of pollution, combined reports constituted 25.9% newspaper reports and 54.1 per cent of magazine reports, both the greatest proportions.
In case of newspapers, reports concerning noise and vibration occupied the smallest proportion, 5.3 per cent, while in case of magazines, reports concerning accident and special pollution constituted 0.3 per cent, the smallest proportion.
4. Although intellectuals directly and indirectly participating in policy-making in government agencies showed rather low standards of knowledge and concern about pollution, those engaged in education, technical fields, and control of pollution showed high degrees of knowledge and concern.
5. Even approximately 60 per cent of proprietors of industrial facilities which cause pollution wanted balanced growth.
