Abstract

This study was carried out with 200 house-wives purposively drawn from among the residents of the municipal apartment area in seoul. Interviews were made with all of the housewives along with the structured questionnaire during the months of July and august of 1972.
The major aspects of the finding are as follows;
1) The age distribution of the respondents was centred at the 25-29 are group with its proportion of 32.5%, and their average age was estimated at 33.4% years. 75.5% of them was nuclear family.
2) The level of their educational attainment was rather higher; high school graduation; 44.5%, College graduation; 23.5%, middle school; 17.0%, elementary school; 10,5%, and illiterate; only 1.5%.
3) The average of the income of households was estimated at 41,450 won (US $ 103.6), and this is campared fairly higher with the estimation of 31,770 won made by the Economic Planning Board in 1971.
4) The medical expenditures occupied rather small portion out of their monthly household expenditures, with 22.5% using not a penny for medical expenses. 52.0% of them spent less then 10 percent of their total expenditures for medical expenses for the last three months, and only 14% spent more than 10 percent of their hiusehold expenditures for medical cares.
5) 98.0% of the total households owned at least one of the of the mass media in the orders of newspaper, radio, T.V., and magazine for higher frequency. It was found, however, that the media as well as the personal communication played too little role in disseminating knowledge on health. This is implied that the health educational approaches through the mass media as well as group meeting for the apartment reaidents have been insufficient.
6) The rate of use of health center is poorly compared with that of hospital visit among the respondcnts. 43% of them has ever visited health center while 54.0% had their first delivery at hospital which is almost the highest rate ever found by the other investigators. It is particularly notewothy that the rate of hospital delivey is becoming lower as their birth orders continue.
7) Decisions about homemakings are rather individually made(selfdecision 50.3%), while majority(52.5%) refers to the doctors for consultation for emergency cases of illness.
