Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to give helpful suggestions in revising and in improving of Midwife Training Course and of Mother & Child Health Service of Korea. The data used in this paper was collected from the responses of trainees who were in the course of taking Midwife Training Course, which was normally offered to those who received Certificates of Nursing.
METHODS: The questionaire was distributed late August, 1972 to 130 trainees working at 30 hospitals where Midwife Training Course was being offered, and replies in response to the questionaire were received from 106 persons. The question being asked are categorized in three: (1)Motivation of taking Midwife Training Course: (2) Responses to lecture and practice of the Training; and (3) Interested fields of employment upon completion of the Course. The following result were obtained:
1. General Aspects of the Trainees: (1)71.9% of them were included in an age group of 20∼24; (2) 89.6% of them were single; (3) All were graduated from one of the three kinds of school--4 year College of Nursing, 3 year Nursing School, and 3 year Technical High School; (4) 70.8% of them were accepted to the Course without building of career as nurse during the period of graduation ot the beginning date of taking the Course; and (5) 67.9% of them were in formed of the Course through their schools, and the rest of them were informed of it through their senior nurses, friends, practicing midwives, and mass communication.
2. The Motivation of Taking the Course: (1) To take an advantage of getting job easily at hospitals (24.7%); (2) To get furthur education (24.7%); (3) To be better equipped as public health nurse (20.8%); (4) To take an advantage in getting an overseas employment (16.9%); (5) Simply to receive Midwife License (7.5%); and (6) To be practicing midwife (0.9%). The motivation varies according to the school system from which they were trained.
3. Responses to Lecture and Practice: (1)Dissatisfied to the lecture (61.4%), an with the practice (55.7%). The ratio is suggestive. To improve the curriculum by adding such courses as Public Health Nursing and Family Planning may be helpful to them. It is no wonder that the upgrading of teachers and curriculum inprovement may expediate the achievement of a goal of so called theory-and-practice-go-together-education.
4. Interested Fields of Employment Upon Completion of the Course: (1) Contineous hospital employment (50.9%); (2) Overseas employment (27.4%); (3) Health Center employment (4.7%); and (4) Practising midwife service (3.8%). The ratio of interested fields of employment goes together with that of motivation in taking Midwife Training Course, but it does not likely go togther with the original aim and purpose of offering the Course . In other words, their choice in interested work fields upon completion of this Course does not seem to challenge to the social need in getting engaged in activities at the areas where medical facilities are poorly provided in comparison with other areas of Korea.
