Abstract

Different disease patterns by region especially in chronic disease, have been observed in earlier studies. Attention has been paid to patterns of food consumption as one of the significant factors. As a first step an analysis of the regional differences of behavior, from the stand-point of food consumption, has been attempted.
The whole country has been divided into five regions from an ecological aspect, namely, urban, farm, fishery, mountainous and mining regions. The concepts of homogeneity and nodality from regional science are introduced into this study, and these two attributes are proposed as variables; mean will be taken as the indicator of homogeneity, and variance as that of nodality. Four types of regional differences in consumption of individual foods have been deducted as the result.
Patterns of food consumption have also examined in the regional domain to determine whether mathematical models represent an adequate description of food behavior using mean and standard deviation of per capita food consumption in the region as variables. A linea regression function Y=α-β logx, and a parabolic function Y=ax??, are examined. Coefficients from both functions are statistically significant and procedures have been outlined for arriving at the best estimates of the parameters. Systematic patterns of coefficients β and b, and constant terms α and a are apparent.
