A Study on Gastrointestinal Symptoms Occurred among Middle and High School Students in Seoul Area

Abstract


This study was conducted to find out gastro-intestinal disturbances of 1,538 middle and high school students (male-750, female-788)by means of questionnaire from June 20 to July 9, 1973 in Seoul. Two classes were selected from each grade of girl´s and boy´s middle and high school.
The following conclusins were obtained as a result of this study;
I. General information of students.
1. The distribution of age were between 11∼19 years old.
2. In religion, 20.6 percents of male and 26.4 percents of female students were Christianities while 15.6 percents of male and 12.6 percents of female students were Buddhism, and 58.9 percents of male and 54.2 percents of female students showed not having religion.
3. The 6∼8 members of family size of male students was 60.9 percents and that of female students was 63.5 percents.
4. Utilization of medical facilities for gastro-intestinal disturbances, drug store was 46.8 percents in male and 49.6 percents in female students and no consultation was 39.0 percents in male and 34.2 percents in female students.
II. Relationship between gastro-intestinal symptoms and warious variances:
1. The students with gastro-intestinal symptons were 54.5 percents of the total number of responded students.
2. The higher the school year, the more frequent of gastro-intestinal symptoms were observed. (Fratio→3.70, df→832,5, P<0.005).
3. The longer the time taken from home to school, the more frequent of gastro-intestinal symptoms were observed. But the statistical test turned out not significantly. (F ratio→2.12, df→814,2, p>0.05).
4. The average frequency of gastro-intestinal symptoms were increased when shorter time ofr breakfast or no breadfast was taken. It was significant at F ratio→10.90, df→806,2, p<0.001.
5. The average frequency of gastro-intestinal symptoms were decreased when the students reached higher level of school achievement. The result of statistical test was significant at F ratiop→4.21, df→725,2, p<0.05.
6. The average frequency of gastro-intestinal symptoms did not changed by variation of harmony with their parents. The test was significant at F ratio→15.29, df→811,2, p<0.001.
7. The average frequency of gastro-intestinal symptoms were increased as the birth order of the student was prior. The test was significant at F ratio→3.38, df→812,2, p<0.05.
8. The average frequency of gastro-intestinal symptoms were increased according to the number of self-identified socio-medical problems were getting increased. The test was significant at F ratio→7.64,df→822,3, p<0.001.
