Abstract

In order to study the yearly trends of medical expenses in Korea, yearly trends were reviewed through published reference data. Yearly amounts of medical expenses were estimated, and ratio between medical expenses paid to public medical institutions and those paid to private medical establishments was calculated as well as the proportion of the total amount of medical expenses in the Gross National Product
(GNP).
The resultant data is summarized as follows:
1. Medical expenses have been on the yearly increase. For the five-year period from 1966 to 1971, average increase rate was 34 per cent in large cities, 28 per cent in medium cities and small towns, and 19 per cent in rural areas.
2. From 1966 to 1971, medical expenses estimated on the basis of average monthly income per household increased by \581 in urban areas and by \355 in rural areas. Under the premise of setting data for 1980, the base year, at 100, the index of medical expenses in urban areas was 61,7 for 1966 and 175.5 for 1971, a 3-fold increase. In rural areas, the index was 69.6 for 1966 and 194.0 for 1980, slightly higher in rate of increase than in urban areas.
3. The total amount of medical expenses spent throughout the nation reached 38.1 billion in 1967 and 79.9 billion in 1970, nearly a two fold composition, however, the amounts were broken down into 18.2 per cent for public expenses paid by public medical institutions occupied a relatively small proprtion in this country.
4. The ratio of total amount of medical expenses to GNP has shown a trend of increase from 2.1 per cent for 1967 to 3.1 per cent in 1970 which was an unprecedently high rate.
