A Study on Emotional Change of Mothers during Pregnancy and Delivery among Hospitalized Cases

Abstract


This study was carried out to get information on emotional changes of expectant mothers during pregnancy and delivery for the purpose of reducing psychological burdens of labor and delivery as well as to improve nursing care of the mother.
Two hundred and eighty-nine mothers who were hospitalized in 4 university hospitals in Seoul were interviewed from June 1 to August 31, 1974.
The followings were the results:
1. Factors influencing the emotional changes during pregnancy.
1) If the expectant mothers were more femininely mature, the emotional status were more stable.
2) The primiparas were emotionally more stable than the multiparas.
3) Less emotional changes were noted in the desired pregnancy.
4) Less emotional changes were noted in the groups grown up in the happier environment.
5) The knowledges of pregnancy, delivery and puerperium had no relationships in the emotional changes during pregnancy.
6) Those who had the satisfactory marital life showed more positive response toward the pregnancy.
2. Factors influencing the minor physiological discomforts during pregnancy.
1) If the feminine maturity is higher, the minor physiological discomforts were more easily endured.
2) The primiparas showed more positive response toward the minor physiological discomforts during pregnancy than multiparas.
3) More positive response noted in the desired pregnancy .
4) More positive responses were noted in the groups grown up in the happier environment.
5) If the knowledges of pregnancy, delivery and puerperium are higher, more positive response towards the minor discomforts.
6) There were no relationships between the marital satisfaction and the minor Physiological discomforts.
