Patterns of III-Health Conditions and Home Accidents among Infants and Preschool Children

Abstract


This study was conducted to figure out the patterns of ill-health coditions and home accidents. among infants and preschool children with the relation to family planning variables, such as number of siblings, birth order and birth interval of child, and age of mothers at birth etc.
To obtain the informations, the author had interviewed with the mothers whose child was under 6 years of ago attended at well baby clinic and out patient clinic of pediatric department in Seoul National University Hospital from April 20 to August 30, 1974. The occurrences of ill-health and home accidents during the past one month period were available in this study.
The informations were collected on 186 infants and children attended at well baby and well child clinic , and on 254 patients. In the analysis of data relating to the occurrence of ill-health conditions, the 254 outpatients were exluded to avoid overestimation.
The results obtained through this study were as followed;
1. About 50.5percent of those infants and children had ill-health conditions once or more during the past one month and this was equivalent to 602.1 per 1,000 persons. That of home accidents were calculated as 11.1 percent and 115.2 per 1,000 persons, respectively.
2. The experiences of ill-health and home accidents were seemed to be more frequent among older child or girl than among infants or boys
3. The occurrences of home accidents were observed to be increased with the later child and larger number of siblings but the ill-health conditions had irregular patterns with these variables.
4. The occurrences of ill-health and home accidents were turned out to be less frequent among the infants and children with more than 2 years of birth interval from their older siblings.
5. The frequency of ill-health conditions were lowest among the children whose mother´s age was 30∼34 years old but that of home accidents were highest among this group.
6. The average durations for the cure of ill-health and of injuries by home accidents were estimated by 5.3 days 3.7 days, respectively.
7. Among ill-health conditions, upper respiratory illnesses occupied 67.0 percent and gastrointestinal conditions were 26.6 percent. falling was the most frequent home accidents and injuries due to physical agents were next ones.
8. Most of ill-health and of injuries by home accidents were treated at physician´s clinic or hospital. These proportions were 64.9 percent or 74.5 percent, respectively.
