Abstract

To investigate the infection status of Enterobius ermicularis the author tried surveys of scotch-tape anal swab in school children and of contamination of environment by eggs of E. vermicularis. The survey was carried out during september to October, 1974 in suburban and rural areas. And the results could be summarized as follows:
1. Result of survey of infections status in school children: The surveys were undertaken everyday morning(9:00∼12:00) by applying the Graham´s scotch tape anal swab technique.
1) The egg positive rate of anal swab was 29.9%(male 26.0%, female 33.8%) out of 1,939 school children and significantly higher in female group.
2) The egg positive rate of rural school children(32.9% out of 992 children of two primary schools) was significantly higher than that of suburban school children (26.7% out of 949 of one primary school children). The difference was statistically significant(0.001 2. Contamination of Enterobius eggs on nail bed:
1) It was revealed by zinc sulfate floatation technique that 2.9% out of 549 children were contaminated with the eggs on their nail beds.
2) The positive rate of eggs in nail was analysed to see the correlation with positiveness of anal swab. Among 139 positive anal swabs, 14(10.1%) revealed the contamination of eggs in nail but in case of 410 negative anal swab cases only 2(0.5%) were contaminated. The difference was statistically significant(p<0.001).
3) Contamination of classroom dust of primary school with Enterobius eggs: Total 172 collections(1∼2 grams per sample) of dust from the primary schools were examined to find out the degree of contamination by applying the zinc sulfate floatation technique. It was revealed that 4 samples out of 172(2.3%) were contaminated with eggs of Enterobius vermicularis.
