Absenteeism and Accidents among a Primary School Chidren in Seoul

Abstract


To measure the health problems among a school children the author analyzed the records of health clinic at a primary school in Seoul.
The records during about 5 years from May 1, 1967 on which the school health clinic was opened to the end of 1971 school year were included in this study. During that periods, the school days were 1,076 days and 8,722 children(4,990 boys and 3,732 girls) were concerned.
The findings in this study were summarized as follows:
1. There were 11.5 school days lost per 1,000 pupil days, Medical causes accounted for 82 percent of the days lost and 9.4 days lost per 1,000 pupil days.
2. Although the loss of school days were highest in September and October, the proportions of medical causes were higher in March, April and May and were lower in fall.
3. the school days lost by medical reasons were calculated 8.6 per 1,000 pupil days for boys and 10.5 for girls, and the trends to decline slowly with old school tear were observed.
4. The average frequency of visits at health clinic for a child were 1.6per a year, of which 19.1 percent were due to the accidents of children. this rate were decreasing since the early years.
5. There were 1.4 accidents per 1,000 days among school children in those periods and 2.8 and 2.3 accidents per 1,000 pupil days were occurred on May and June, respectively by month. There were some difference in the frequency of accidents by grade years of school children. Accidents were most frequent in the third grade and race in the sixth grade. Those were occurred most frequently during around the lunch time and more than 60 percent in the playground of the school.
6. there were no fatal accidents but several severe cases needed the hospital cares. The proportition of the about mentioned severe cases were 3.1 percent of all accidents. And were higher among the children in the third or fourth grade and lowest n the sixth grade. In recent years the proportion of the severe accidents were increased.
