Abstract

The source of the data of this study was provided by the department of health education of the School of public Health that carried out a study on "Some Behavioral Problems in Sequential Processes of Adoption in Family Planning" in 1973 at the experimental sites of the school. The original data were collected from a sample of 935 eligible women to age of 49 years living with their husbands in Shindong myon Chunsong kun, Kangwon province, Korea. The tabulations were made, however, from 828 fecundable women, excluding cases with sterility and the menopaused.
The variable were selected from the original materials to study on the relationships between husband-wife communication and family planning practice.
The major findings of the survey were as follows;
1) The average age of the respondents was 32.6 years with the age-group of 30∼34 as a medium. And, 86.4 percent of the respondents attained their education below sixth grade.
2) The average number of children was 3.5 with 1.8 sons and 1.7 girls.
3) the current practice rate was rather higher(41.3%) compared with the other findings in Korea.
Based on the findings of the survey, the investigator draws a health educational implication. The husband-wife communication is the last channel of flow of message that can facilitate of intervene the family planning discussion while family planning is a cooperative behavior that can not be done by one side of the couple. Since family planning is deeply related with sex, it is still somewhat taboo topic that prohibits open communication even between husband and wife. The most critial phenomenon is that the young couples or those with one child or without children tend not to have husband-wife discussion on family planning. As a result, the average age of the adopters of family planning has been rather too high in Korea and the practice rate has been remaining almost unchanged in the last decade. Therefore, to improve the Korea family planning, it is urgent to encourage husband-wife communication among all age brackets.
