Abstract

This study was carried out to understand the trend of the causes of death in Korea, with understanding of the fact that the result obtained from a selfelected hospital population may not be justified for projection to general pupulation. It was considered, however, that the death certificates issued from an university hospital have higher validity in diagnostic accuracy in Korea where only 28% of total death certificaties were signed by licenced M.D.´s.
1,340 death certificates and death confirmation notes were analyzed; 617 cases in 1974 and 723 cases for the period of 1959-1960, two years.
The results ob taied are as follows:
1. Regarding to the causes of death by 17 International Classification of Diseases;
a) Diseases of circulatory system and neoplasms became the first and the second rank as the leading cause of death in 1974, replading the infective and parasitic diseases and diseases of digestive system, which were two major leading causes of death during 1959-1960.
b) Deaths from accidents, poisoning and violences ranked the third as the cause of death in both periods of study, 1974 and 1959-1960.
2. Regarding to the leading causes of death by age groups:
a) The infective and parasitic diseases were still the leading causes of death among infants and children in 1974.
b) Accidents, poisoning and violences emerged recently as the most important cause of death for the age groups of 5-9 years and 15-29 years when compared with the period of 1959-1960.
3. Regarding to the cause of infant death;
a) Infective and parasitic diseases and certain causes of perinatal mortality were still the leading causes of infant death in 1974.
b) Deseases of respiratory system decreased markedly, and congenital anomalies apperared as one of three leading causes of death for infants recently.
4. Regarding to the leading causes of death by List A;
a) Cerebrovascular disease ranked the first of the ten leading causes of death in both periods of study.
b) Cerebrovascular disease, symproms and other ill-defined conditions, and accidental poisoning were three leading cuses of death in order presented in 1974.
