Abstract

The study on attitudes related to population issues was conducted to explore the psychological climate of nursing students with regard to their plans and opinions about family planning, abortion and equality of sexes. The purpose of the study was to provide basic informations needed in planning of population curriculum for basic nursing programs. The study subjects included 292 nursing students or 90 percent of the total student bocy currently enrolled in a collegiate program in Seoul in spring semester of 1974.
The following are the main findings of the study:
1. The majority of subjects studied(77.7%) was found to favor the idea of family planning and detailed analysis of the subject matter was attempted to assess some qualitative aspect of their responses which follows the next:
a) The majority of respondents(66.1%) was found to have the definite plan to use contraceptive devices in future and their decisions as to use them were more likely in upper classmen than in lower-classmen.
b) With regard to reasons given for having a small sized family or two-child family, the majority(61.6%) gave the reason for "proper rearing of child" and the next(21.2%) was for "more leisure opportunity". When the class level was held constant, it was observed that the upper classmen students were more likely to give "more leisure opportunity". When the class level was held constant, it was observed that the upper classmen students were more likely to give "more leisure opportunity" as the reason for family planning than the lower classmen students.
c) The predominant proportion of the respondents(74.3%) expressed that "the childless marriage" would not be a complete one. When the class level was introduced, the lower classmen students were more likely to choose the response of "incomplete nature of childless marriage", While the upper classmen students were more likely to disregard it as a problem(34.7%).
2. Regarding the attitudes toward the induced abortion, the majority(60.2%) approved it and the significant difference in class level was not found. When the "two-child family" was introduced as an independent varriable, the respondents who favored the "two-child family" were more likely to approve the legalized abortion than those who rejected the idea of a small size family(59%). But it came to the item of "a wealthy family who can afford another child", the majority of respondents disapproved the abortion regardless of their responeses to family planning.
3. Regarding the equality of sexes, nursing students who favored the "two-child family" were more likely to disitive attitudes toward the issue than the students who did not favor a small size family(99.1%). The prodominant proportions of respondents who favored a small size family agreed equal educational opportunity(99.1%), equal opportunity for employment(92.0%), and approved the continuation of married women´s career(82.4%).
