Abstract


This study was conducted to examine the professional activity of Pediatricians´ at the outpatient department of pediatric in a University Hospital during the months of April through May 1976, for five days. Daily activities of eight pediatricians were observed by six trained observers.
The result obtained in detail is as follows;
A. Classification of Pediatricians´ service activities.
1. It was found than a pediatrician, in average, spent 72.6% of his total time for direct patient care while 27.4% of time for other activities including personal time.
2. Of the pediatricians´ time with patients, paper work was the longest (35.3%) and counseling activity was the second longest (14%). Dr. A, B, C and E spent most of their time in counseling respectively every doctor´s counseling time occupied 35.2%, 34.9%, 33.7% and 33% of all their work time with patients.
Dr. D spent most of his time was physical examination; 40.9% and his counseling time was 30.9%.
Dr. F, without assistant physicians, spent most of his time in history taking and information of the patient-that was 28.4% of all his activity time with patients.
Dr. G and H, assistant physicians, spent most of their activity time with patients in paper work.
Dr. G, spent 62.1% and Dr. H, 77.7% of their total activity time with patients.
3. Of the total time (7460.9 min) spent for the counseling, 25.6% of the time was found to spent in explanation the result of physical examination related to the patient´s complaints and 23% of his counseling activity this was spent for the explanation related to the direction of medication while he prescribed.
B. Classification of patients examined by pediatricians and properties of time spent for each activity are as follows;
1. The most frequent disease was respiratory which amounted to 39.1%(236 cases among 604 cases) of patients examined.
2. 33.7% (1195 min) of total pediatricians´ activity time(3545.5 min) (except assistant physicians´ activity time) was found to spent in the examination of the respiratory disease-which was the longest time of pediatricians´ activities.
3. Pediatricians´ service activity time per one patient was as follows;
Dr. C, with his assistant spent on an average 18.5 minutes per one patient this was the longest time among pediatricians concerned.
Dr. B, with his assistant physician, spent on an average 6.4 minutes per one patient this was the shortest time among physicians concerned.
Dr. F, without help of an assistant physician, independently, spent on an average 8.8 minutes on examining one patient.
