Abstract

Recently, there has been increasing evidence that Vinylchloride monomer (VCM) is carcinogenic. Reports from several Polyvinylchloride (PVC) plants in the United States and abroad confirmed 19 cases of angiosarccma among plant personnel. Because PVC is a common food packaging material, this research program has been initiated to determine if any residual VCM migrates into food. VCM in foods is determined by Gas-liquid chromatography either by direct injection of soy sauces or by solvent extraction analysis of rapeseed oils. The lower limit of detection was 10∼15㎍/ml for direct injection and solvent extraction analysis.
The levels of VCM found in foods packaged in PVC bottles were as follows:
1. Migratio of VCM in PVC bottle increased with the storage time.
2. In PVC bottle, migration of VCM of rapeseed oil was higher than that of soy sauce.
3. But, VCM was not detected from rapeseed oil and soy sance contained in glass bottle.
