Abstract

The authors have experienced a case of general anesthesia for a premature baby of congenital esophageal atresia with tracheo-esophgeal fistula, and postoperative atelectasis at right lung field. Removal of secretions, and expansion of collapsed lung intermittently durinng surgical manipulation were thought to be necessary for the prevention of post-operative lung complications.
Postural drainage with intermittent positive pressure breathing, and keeping the patient in incubator with oxygen and humidity after anesthesia was recommended.
Anesthetics which irritate the respiratory tract and increase secretion must be avoided.
Selection of proper sized endotracheal tube has been stressed to prevent traumatic intubation.
