Abstract

The calcium and chloride levels of pregnant and non-pregnant women were determined´ by Clark Collip method for the former and by Schales and Schales method for the latter.
For calcium determination the sera of 37 nonpregnant women and 97 pregnant women Were used, while for chloride determination the sera of 38 non-pregnant women and 100 pregnant women were used.
For convenience the pregnant women were divided into 3 groups, i.e., the first, the second, and the third trimester.
The results obtained are as follows:
1. The mean value of calcium of the non,-pregnant sera was 11.38±0.19mg./100rn1. The mean value of the calcium of the pregnant women was 10.94±0.11mg./100ml., revealing a decrease in calcium level in the sera in pregnancy.
I 2. The mean value of calcium in the sera at the first trimester of pregnancy was 11.22±0.03mg./100 ml. and 10.72±0.23mg./l00ml. at the third trimester, showing a decrease in calcium level in the sera towards term.
3. The mean value of chloride of the non-pregnant sera was 102.10±1.20mEq./L. and of the pregnant sera 105.18±1.3bmEq./L., showing higher value in pregnant than in non-pregnant women.
4. The serum chloride levels show an increase throughout pregnancy from 103.03-+1.29MEq: j./L. in the first trimester, to 108.72±3.28mEq./L. in the third trimester.
