Abstract

This clinical observation was made on 1021 newborns delivered at the National Medical Center in 1966 to figure out any relations between Apgar score and obstetric problems such as the weight of newborn, gestation period, duration of the labor, induction of the labor, sedation,. mule of delivery, antepartum and intrapartum complications.
The results were summarized as followings:
1) Apgar score is useful for the evaluation of the conditions of newborns and strongly associated with obstetric-problems clinically.
2) Percentage distribution of Apgar score for 1021 newborns was 76.8% (784) for score 9-10, 12% (123) for 7.8, 6. 5% (66) for ,4-6 and 4.7% (48) for, 0-3. Stillbirth was 3.8% (39) of all newborns.
3) There was a trend to lower scores in the newborns lower, than 2500gm in weight, but no inclination in over 4000gm.
4) There, vas declining to; lower scores in the newborns less or, more than the Mill term of gestation; (36 - 42wks).
5) There was no significant difference between whole induction group (142: 13.9) and none group, but-lowered scores. in,ipitocin induction group.
6), There was no particular inclination in sedation group (204:20%), but slightly lowered , scores in combined sedation, group.
7) Apgar score was greatly influenced by the modes of the deliveries orderly lowered: spontaneous vertex delivery. Vacuum or forceps delivery, C-section and breech delivery,,
8) There was a great, trend to- the lower scores in newborns associated with antepartum orintrapartum complications.
9) Death rate; within,& 3 days of hospitalization after thebirth was 1.6% (16) of .a11- newborns.
