Abstract


Plasma volume, extracellular and intracellular fluid volume have been estimated in pregnant, progesterone administered non-pregnant rabbits and non-pregnant rabbits as controls.
1) Plasma volume was measured, by use of Evans blue dye. The differences between pregnant and non-pregnant, progesterone administered and non-pregnant rabbits were significant. The mean value of the pregnant, progesterone administered and the non-pregnant rabbits were 35 0(L-0.99), 35.7(=1.90) and 31.4(±0.98)ml/kg body weight, respectively.
2) The extraceliular fluid was measured by use of potassium thiocyanate. A highly significant differences were found between pregnant and non-pregnant, progesterone administered and non-pregnant rabbits. Extracellular fluid increased. from 249(± 5.2) ml/kg of non-pregnant rabbits to 271 (±6.3) ml/kg during pregnancy, and 305 {_10.1) ml/kg during. progesterone administration.
=3) The. amount of. interstitial fluid estimated the difference between extracellular fluid and plasma volume increased from 218(-;-5.4) ml/kg of non-pregnant rabbits to 235(6.5) ml/kg during pregnancy, and 273(±9.2) ml/kg during progesterone administration, and the virus obtained during pregnancy and progesterone administration, differ significantly from those found in non-pregnant rabbits.
.4) The total body water was measured by use of Antipyrine. There was no appreciable difference between pregnant (799±13.5 ml/kg), non-pregnant (805±17.4 ml/ kg) and progesterone administered rabbits (816 15. 3 ml/kg).
5) The amount of intracellular fluid estimated the difference between total body water and extracellular fluid. There was no difference between. pregnant. (542±17.1 ml/ kg) and non-pregnant rabbits (54814.2 ml/kg). But significant decrease was seen in progesterone administered rabbits (501=17.2 , ml/kg).
