Abstract

Eight rabbits were divided into 4 groups as follows:
Group 1. Control (sham operated)
Group 2. Ligated at 1/3 portion of left lobe of liver
Group 3. Resected at 1/3 portion of left liver lobe and autotransplanted in right inguinal region. Group 4. Resected at 1/3 portion of left lobe of liver
Ten out of 20 rabbits of , each group were killed at 24 hours and remaining ten rabbits were killed at 48 hours after operation. Immediately after killing parts of middle liver lobe were taken out for incubation with incubation media containing C14-glucose.
The result of this experiment was as follows,
1. The glucose consumption rate of liver injured rabbit liver- was noticeably increased. The order of the increase was control 3 - Relative specific activity of produced CO2 was almost same as glucose consumption rate. the maximum value was 236%
3. CO2 production rate by incubation mixture was also similar with above 1 and 2. The maximum value was
170%.
4. Relative glucose disappearance from incubation media showed little variation. The maximum value was 137%, but the rate was not so great.
From the result thus obtained, it may be concluded that the liver injury causes prompt increase of glucose metabolism to provide energy for reconstruction of damaged liver tissue. And the rate of increase of glucose metabolism is dependent upon the nature and degree of injury and time duration after injury.
