Abstract

Since Passavant described surgically created palatopharyngeal adhesion to correct velopharyngeal incompetence, many surgical techniques and prosthetic devices have been recommended to correct incompetence of the velopharyngeal sphincter.
Historically, the surgical procedures may be classified as follows : (1) pharyngoplasty: (2) palatal push-back or lengthening procedures; (3) augmentation pharyngoplasties; (4) pharyngeal flap procedures; (5) reconstruction of velopharyngeal sphincter; and (6) combination of the above.
The authors have attempted a newly modified combined operation which consists of Hynes pharyngoplasty together with a inferiorly based posterior pharyngeal flap.
The evaluation of the surgical results was favorable.
