Abstract

The population of Southwest Korea, where Presbyterian Medical Center is located, is primarily engaged in agriculture, and the majority follows a pattern of living which has been altered to a very minimal extent by Twentieth Century technology. To a degree which is probably not to be found elsewhere in Korea, the inhabitants of the Honam area thus constitute a somewhat homogeneous society. A statistical analysis of the cancer incidence in this geographical area therefore would appear to be of substantial significance.
The Cancer Registry of Presbyterian Medical Center was established on January 1, 1963. All neoplastic diseases are coded in accordance with the nomenclature system of the American Medical Association, and Tumor Clinic Follow-up is now provided for in accordance with the guidelines for Cancer Registries which are set forth by the American College of Surgeons. Included in this Cancer Registry are all malignant neoplastic lesions which have been proven histologically, and in addition a certain number of cases which were not proved by tissue biopsy, but were considered sufficiently authentic by a Review Board to warrant inclusion. In all of the cases in the latter group there has been radiographic and or cytologic confirmation.
From 1963 through 1966, 1,870 new primary cancers were diagnosed among 45,156 new patients. This represents an overall incidence of 4.14 oo f all new patients seen. There were 1,168 males and 702 females in this group. The anatomical and sex distribution of these cases is shown in Table 1.
