Abstract

This study was undertaken to evaluate the basal metabolism of orphanage children in Korea and to compare with the basal metabolism of Korean homebored children. The calorimetry of 39 boys and 48 girls, ranging in age from 7to 15 years, were carried out by Douglas-Holdan´s method at the bed side of subjects. The factors of cold, muscular exercise, keeping warm in the room in winter, malnutrition and fever which influence basal metabolism were stuied.
Also the energy metabolims in sleeping was examined: and the individual permanency of basal metaboliwm was testified.
1) The growth and nutrition were ratarded and reduced more remarkable in orphanage children, under in 11 years than over in 11 years, in comparison with the Korean home-bared children. The basal metabolism produced a decrease in the orphanage children than in the Korean home-bred children in a large proportion of each age-group, except in male 7,11 age-groups, in female 8,9,10 age-groups. The T-test on comparing with the basal metabolism of orphanage children and the home-bred children by age showed "not significant" for the most age-group.
2) The basal metabolism of orphange children was also increased in winter. (approximately male 12%, female 9.7%, respectively above the basal metabolism in warm weather.)
3) The B.M.R. did not show any significant increasing in keeping warm in bed even under in cold weather.
4) The B.M.R. produced a significant increase in moderate muscle exercise. (approximately; 12%-30% respectively above the control values.)
5) The B.M.R. produced an increase infever. (approximately 7%-14% respectively more than the control values, for the rise of 1℃. body temperature.)
6) The energy metabolism in sleeping showed a decrease 6.4% of the basal metabolism.
7) The individual permanency of the basal metabolism was testified.
