Abstract

The blood pyruvic and lactic acid levels were determined in 36 patients with various liver diseases (10 cases of hepatitis, 14 of liver cirrhosis, 6 of hepatic coma and 6 of liver cancer) and 22 control subjects(15 normal persons and 7 patients with gastritis or banign peptic ulcer). In 14 patients with hepatic parenchymatous disease, changes of the blood pyruvic and lactic acid levels following the administration of thioctic acid were observed. The results were summarized as follows:
1) In patients with liver disease the blood level of pyruvic and lactic acids was markedly elevated as compared with the normal subjects.
2) No difference was found in the blood pyruvic and lactic acid levels between patients with hepatitis and those with liver cirrhosis. Patients in hepatic coma showed a markedly elevated of blood pyruvic acid, and in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma the blood level of lactic acid is remarkably elevated.
3) No constant change of blood pyruvic and lactic acid levels was found in 7 patients treated with the intramuscular injection of thioctic acid 10mg. daily. But after treating with 30mg. of thioctic acid daily in 7 patients with hepatic parenchymatous disease, the change of blood pyruvic anc lactic acid levels following the glucose loading was observed with the slight reduction of the acid levels.
