Studies on the Effect of Hypoxia and Hypercapnia on Cardiopulmonary Function

Abstract


The effects of acute hypereapnia induced by inhalation of 5.5% CO₂+ 20% O₂and 8.5% CO₂+ 20% O₂gas mixture on hemodynamics and pulmonary functions were studied in 16 dogs anesthetized with sodium thicpental and the following results were obtained.
1) The mean arterial CO₂tension was elevated to about 50mm.Hg and 75mm.Hg when 5.5% CO₂misture(5.5% CO₂group) and 8.5% CO₂micture (8.5%CO₂group)was inhaled, respectively.
2) The minute ventilation was increased approximately three fold in 5.5% CO₂group and about four fold in 8.5% CO₂group. These increase was brought about in increment both of respiration rate and tidal volume.
3) The oxygen uptake was not significantly changed in both groups but the elimination of carbon dioxide was considerably decreased in 8.5% CO₂group.
4) The level of arterial oxygen saturation was slightly elevated in both groups.
5) The cardiac output was reduced as a result of decrease in storke volume in 5.5% CO₂group, whereas it was maintained by increment of storke volume in 8.5% CO₂group.
6) The femoral arterial mean pressure was decreased in both groups but the decrease was comparable to that in control group. The total peripheral resistance was elevated in 5.5% CO₂group whereas it was slightly lowered in 8.5% CO₂group.
7) A slight elevation of femoral venous pressure was noted in both groups.
8) A fall in pulmonary arterial mean pressure in both groups as in control group was observed. The fall in pulmonary arterial mean pressure was caused by reduced cardiac output in 5.5% CO₂group and by lowered total pulmonary resistance in 8.5% CO₂group.
