Abstract

A follow-up study applying the ajustment of Korean standardizing reformed Wetzel´s grid method as revised and standardized for use in Korea on some primary school children in their 6th grade in Seoul City and adjacent rural areas was under-taken .by the author in 1957 in an attempt to examine their status in the chronological growth and development during. the past six years.
The child-ren studied were from E-School, a private ´school which predominates in terms of facilities and of the parent´s economic conditions, K-School, a pu-blic school of class A, D-School, of a public school class B, and H-School located in the rural area. The following results were obtained from this study:
1. 59%, 57%, 46% and 42% respectively of the urban children from E-, K-, and D-Schools and the rural children from H-School manifested change in the body-build which was defined as abnormality by Wetzel, during their school life. It was obvious that the more changes in the body-build the taller they were.
2. The developmental levels of 18%, 28%, 38% and 55% respectively of those from E-, K-, D- and H-Schools have turned out to be lower than those at entrance. Such levels were found to be correlated with their economic status.
3. 39%, 49%, 34% and 56% respectively of those from E-, K-, D- and H-Schools were manifesting warning signs of ill-health or growth failure for one, or more times during their primary school life. Those who reported having manifested such signs twice or more were 4%, 6%, 5.5% and 10% respectively.Correlation of regularity was not always notice-able between the episodes of growth failure and the extra-curricular study loads for entrance examina-iion, which is thought to be increasing with the advancement of the school grades the individual economic levels.
Therefore it is recommended that for better health of the school children the overall reform of the existing system of entrance examination should not be over-emphasized, without proper attentions to be given to the essential school health measures such as communicable disease control, environ mental sanitation or nutrition. Wetzel´s grid was-proven to be recommendable as one of the measuresfor improvemen t of school health.
