Abstract

This study was undertaken to observe the effect of lycium chinenses, pachma hoelen, and acorus calamus on cholesterol induced atherosclerosis in rabbits. The rabbits were placed on one of four diets containing combinations of cholesterol, lyciuni chinense, pachyma hoelen and acorus calamusfor
12 weeks during which time serum alpha and betalipoprotein cholesterol were determined at 2 weeks intervals. After termination of experiment, thoracic aorta of all animals was critically graded for the incidence and serverity of atheroma.
The results were summarized as follows:
1. The cholesterol ester, free cholesterol in serum alpha-and beta-lipoprotein of rabbits fed with non cholesterol diet with lycium chinense, pachyma hoand acorus calamus showed no significant difference as compared with the valves determined before the experimental diet started.
2. During the period of cholesterol diet feeding, the serum lipoprotein cholesterol content of whole cholesterol diet group showed a linear increase mainly due to elevation of beta lipoprotein cholesterol and there also no significant influences of lycium chinense, pachyma hoelen and acorus calamus were observed.
3. In spite of the high concentration of lipoprotein cholesterol, the development of atheromatosis in thoracic aorta was significantly reduced in aco견 calamus fed group compare with the other cholesterol diet group.
