Abstract

The clinical evaluation of the diuretic effects of ethacrynic acid, a new diuretic agent, was studied: in 5 healthy Korean adults and 20 patients with, edema of various causes.
1. Prominent diuresis as well as naturetic effects were observed in healthy individuals.
2. The most satisfactory diuresis was obtained in the patients with congestive heart failure and/or hypertension. The agent showed less favourable. effect in the patients with liver cirrhosis or renal. failure.
3. There are also prominent diuresis in the patients with intractable edema who did not responded, to other diuretics.
4. Mild, side effects including fatigability and nausea were noticed, but there were no other serious side effects.
5. Ethacrynic acid is therefore recommendable as one of the potent, safe, and new diuretics.
