Abstract

The selected 58 murderers who had been refered to Chung Rhyang-Ri Mental Hospital for 5 years since Jan. 1964, were presented under statistical evaluation. The other point I wanted to stress was something expected differences compared with Kim´s and Lanzkron´s results.
1. The tendency was resemble to psychotics (schizophrenia) in personal view point, in general. Maximal in twenties, low economic conditions, unskilled or unstable occupational and low educated states, was almost same as Kim´s and Lanzkron´s reports. But male was higher than expected one as inpsychoses. The ratio was 5 : 1. And the sharp decline after fifties in number was meaningful, suggesting some factors in this social background.
2. Most of them didin´t get religions and previous legal problemes which was meaningful in compairing with Lanzkron´s. Not as general criminals, the birth place of slayers (almost same with dwellplace) was high in rural.
3. The methods of homiciding were quite variable such as knife (kitchen), axe, stone, towel, shovel, ect. There was not even a gun. In victims, neighbours or extrafamily members were higher than intrafamilies. It was almost same as Kim´s and Lanzkro´s.But there differences observed in family member´s as victims. In Korea, offender´s parents and sons or daughters were higher than America, there,wives-or husbands were not lower, especially in husbands, as in Korea.
4. The motivated factors were due to delusion in 56.9%. 31 out of them were schizophrenia, 8 epilepsy, and only 3 were personality disorders. The differences in personality disorders (between Korea. and America) didn´t mean the exact incident rate. Rather it was due a social attitude toward them. History of admission before murder was only 15.5%. But it is interesting one the family members had known or suspected something changed in offender´s personality at least 6 months before murder. Social and economic problems should be evaluated for coming ages, I think.
5. In this psychiatric opinion, 47 out of 58 murderers were evaluated as being irresponsible, because of their insanity. There is not, however, any responsiblity for treatment, admission and psychiatric observation in the legal view point. How can we handle them and prevent? It will be urgent to, discuss some devices of prevention for coming ages.
