Abstract

This report is based on postoperative results and audiological evaluation in 263 cases who had undergone Intact Canal Wall Tympanoplasty during a 2 year´s period from july I1968 through September 30, 1970 at E.N.T. dep´t of the Presbyterian Medical Center.
Particular attention is drawn to postoperative audiological evaluations which were performed at regular interval following ossicular reconstructions with the following results:
1. The incidence of 263 cases of Intact Canal Wall Tympanoplasty with Mastoidectomies was highest in the young age groups, from 10 to 29 years old.
2. 210(80%) of the operations were performed as a one-stage procedure, 60% of which also received ossicular reconstruction, mainly-incus repositioning and the use of incus homografts.
3. Hearing for all operative groups except revisions was restored to adequacy socially and twothird of the cases came within 20 db of the preoperative bone conduction level.
A total of 72% obtained what would be considered "good results" for hearing.
4. The most common complications were postoperatively infections with recurrent and/or residual cholesteatoma. These infections originated from pseudomonas, proteus, or both, and were difficult to cure completely.
