Abstract


The operative lengthening of the diseased side or stimulation of growth rather than the operative shortening of a normal side or inhibition of growth has been considered an idealistic treatment for the inequality in length of the lower extremity in the orthopedic field.
I have attempted to stimulate a process of bone growth of epiphyseal plate of an experimental growing
animal above the normal size by the following methods:
1. To insert Kirschner¢¥s wire in the distal portions of the metaphysis and epiphysis of a rab it. 2. To install a traction apparatus on the afore-mentioned Kirschner¢¥s wire.
3. To insert a silver jingle bell with 7 mm-diameter in the distal epiphyis of a puppy¢¥s femoral. bone. Results of the experiments
The first and second experiment have proven that the skeletal traction did not contribute anything to stimulation and inhibition of a bone growth, although the two experiments have shown approximately 0.5 mm-stimulation growth on 60% of the whole disregarding the effectiveness of traction apparatus between the Kirschner¢¥s wire.
In the third experiment tohe sonic stimulative effect on the epiphysis of the puppy¢¥s femur with the insertion of the jingle bell has also failed to stimulate and inhibit a bone growth.
