Abstract

This paper represents a series of compression arthrodesis performed in 8 knees, 6 ankles and 1 shoulder at the Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan. 1964 to Dec. 1970.
8 cases with tuberculous arthritis, one of those having mixed secondary infection, and 3 cases with septic arthritis with severe joint destruction were treated by this method.
The remainder include traumatic osteoarthritis of ankle, flexion contracture of knee with dislocation of the femoral condyle and Erb¢¥s palsy.
The average age of patients was 39.3 years ranging between 17 years and 70 years. 11 males and 4 females were in the group.
The average duration required for attaining arthrodesis was 8.5 weeks with no failure.
It is our opinion that the compression arthrodesis is the procedure of choice for those with indications for joint fusion.
