Abstract
In the treatment of fracture, compression fixation according to AO method was invented and developed by Muller and Allgower which has been surprisingly excellent.
The complete anatomical reduction and rigid internal fixation bring the fractured cortical end firm and make early mobilization possible. Also it gives complete union and prevents joint stiffness.
With particular caution about several points in its technique, the result will be much better than the other conventional methods.
We have experienced with 72 cases treated by compression fixation according to AO method among 259 fractured patients from April 1969 to March 1974. and the result is reported herein.
1. We compared the 72 cases of compresion fixation with the 187 cases who had been treated either conservatively or operatively by conventional method with classical plate and screws, screws fixation or intramedullary nailing.
2. The age of the patients ranged from 16 to 65 years.
3. The number of cases which were treated with compression fixation by site are as follows; humerus 6, forearm 16, femur 28, tibia 14, ankle 8 cases.
4. There were 64 closed, and 8 open fractures.
5. The immobillization period was different by site, averaging 4-7 weeks, which is shorter than required with other methods, and subsequent early mobilization could prevent joint stiffness.
6. Union was accomplished in all cases and average duration varied between $and 17 weeks, whereas several non-union and delayed union were brought about in other methods.
7. No significant complications noted in follow-up study, which had been conducted in 70% of whole cases for the peroid of 5 months or longer.
